The General Partnership “HOCHTIEF Solutions, LNK Industries” put the 12th berth of the Freeport of Ventspils into commission.
The General Partnership “Hochtief Solutions, LNK Industries” put the 12th berth into commission on the territory of the Freeport of Ventspils. In addition to construction of the berth, this large-scale project included rebuilding of the sewerage inverted siphon under River Venta, reconstruction of the existing railway and construction of an open storage area. Dredging of the water area of the berth and the adjacent channel to a depth of 12.5 meters was accomplished.
Latvian enterprise "LNK Industries" JSC and German enterprise "Hochtief Solutions Baltics" have united into “HOCHTIEF Solutions, LNK Industries” GP in order to implement the Ventspils' object and have won the tender organised by the Freeport of Ventspils Authority and, in August 2013, have concluded an agreement for the construction of the 12th berth on the territory of the Freeport. The total length of the berth is 460 m and it is designed to operate with "Panamax" type vessels. The construction of the 12th berth, which is located in close vicinity to the drawbridge across the River Venta, is a significant contribution to the development of infrastructure of the Freeport of Ventspils, ensuring the increase of turnover of general and bulk cargo.
On top of everything else, this project is unique because of the construction of the inverted siphon (tunnel), which allowed connecting the city sewer systems on both banks of the River Venta. Machines that were remotely controlled from the riverbank have dug out the tunnel.
"There is no other place in Latvia where an inverted siphon of such length would be placed in such a depth and below the river bed. This is a unique case, since usually the inverted siphons are built beneath the roads" - explains the Member of the Board of "LNK Industries" JSC Jevgenijs Locovs. There are two inverted siphons in the new tunnel - one operating and one spare. The previous inverted siphon, which was buried at a depth of 10 meters, has hindered the execution of dredging works. Right now, it is placed much deeper than the previous one. Three railway branches and eight 25-meter high lighting masts are built on the berth. Part of the berth was built on a territory that was reclaimed from the river, therefore it was necessary to excavate 27 thousand cubic meters of soil on the construction site and replace it with a layered “cake” of sand, gravel, crushed stone, geogrid and geotextile prepared in accordance with a special technology that ensures a high load-bearing capacity. Therefore, each layer of the “cake” was inspected separately. A 318 m long anchor wall made of metal pipes driven in the depth of 37 meters is holding the cordon line of the berth along with a concrete anchor support.
Current project is one of the projects that "LNK Industries" JSC is implementing in the Freeport of Ventspils. The "LNK Industries Group" General Partnership has worked on several large-scale projects initiated by the Freeport of Ventspils Authority: disassembly of the 1st pier of the Freeport of Ventspils, reconstruction of the Venta bridge. Currently the reconstruction of the vessel-mooring berth of the Freeport of Ventspils authority, which began in September 2014, is being continued by the “LNK Industries Group” General Partnership, which consists of "LNK Industries" JSC and "Latvijas Tilti" JSC. The berth reconstruction works are expected to be completed in the summer of 2015.
