The project provided significant improvements to critical national infrastructure — LNK Industries reconstructed a section of the A5 national road 0.3—2.38 kilometres above Riga’s HPP right bank drainage system, including the roundabout at the beginning of the route and the drainage system itself.

To ensure the structural capacity of the heavily trafficked road (up to 10,000 vehicles per day pass here) as well as the traffic safety and comfort of drivers, while also taking care of its harmonic integration into the landscape, the rebuilt section of the A5 was moved 7—8 metres to the right of the drainage system. This has allowed the drainage manholes to be moved out of the carriageway, reducing the traffic load on the system and providing the space needed for reconstruction work.

As the function of the drainage system is to lower the water levels and protect the hydroelectric dam from leaching, the main challenge during the reconstruction was the need to ensure that the water levels of the hydroelectric power station stayed within the specified limits. Likewise, the traffic on the A5 needed to remain uninterrupted during the construction works.

To dismantle the collector pipes of the previous drainage system (built in the 1970s) and construct a new pipe system, a 1.9-kilometre-long, 1.8-metre-wide and up to 6.5-metre-deep construction pit was created, using innovative vibration-free technology to prevent ground collapses and leaching of the dam due to high water pressure. Each new section of the drainage system was tested several times under strict control procedures to guarantee the strength and durability of the new system.
