Third Year of Construction in the Rail Baltica Project at Riga Airport

Third Year of Construction in the Rail Baltica Project at Riga Airport

We inaugurated the construction site for the Rail Baltica station and related infrastructure at Riga Airport in June 2021. In the third year of construction, the work on the reinforced concrete load-bearing structures of the Riga Airport railway station building, passenger platforms, and the inner viaduct section is nearing completion. We have already used approximately 16,000 m3 of concrete in the construction. The viaduct section at the station is being built to be exceptionally durable, as the calculated train speed in the station area is 120 km/h during braking and acceleration. The station building now stands 14 meters tall (with a total planned height of 24.8 meters), and we expect to complete its reinforced concrete structures this year.

2024 marks the start of the second and most significant construction phase, as the track laying extends towards both Riga and Mārupe. Approximately 250 construction workers are regularly employed at the site, and the construction area has now expanded to 30,320 m2.

Work has commenced in the restricted area of Riga Airport. When planning construction work, it is crucial to ensure the airport’s continuous operation and handle new developments promptly. “In the restricted area, we are reconstructing existing utility networks, as well as the airport’s fuel station and boiler house, to make space for the upcoming railway viaduct. We have successfully tested half of the test piles for the viaduct supports in the direction of Mārupe,” revealed Maija Baltgalve, a member of the executive committee of “BSL Infra.”

Over the three years of construction, we have completed a significant amount of work, including the construction of 2,490 meters of roads and 52,350 meters of utility networks. Alongside the mentioned 16,000 m3 of concrete, approximately 53,000 m3 of sand and 64,000 m3 of crushed stone have been brought to the construction site.

AS “LNK Industries” is carrying out the construction work as part of the consortium “BSL Infra,” which includes the Austrian company “Swietelsky AG” and Latvian construction companies: road construction firm SIA “Binders,” and one of the largest construction companies in Latvia, AS “LNK Industries.”

The Rail Baltica railway station at Riga Airport will be the first high-speed rail and air transport connection hub in the Baltics.
