LNK Industries Group Puts the Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge over the Jurmala Motorway into Operation

The LNK Industries Group General Partnership puts into operation the pedestrian/cyclist bridge over the A10 motorway in the Babite rural territory, on the 14.82 km of the Riga–Ventspils motorway. The construction of the bridge was carried out by order of the Latvijas Valsts ceļi (LVC) SJSC, the author of the construction design is the Projekts 3 LLC. The cost of the bridge construction is EUR 1,059,959.99 (including VAT).

The bridge span structure consists of a three-span steel framework, which is supported by steel suspension cables, the length of the bridge is 78.24 meters and the width is 3.67 meters. It is based on 18 monolithic reinforced concrete supports, and bridge foundations are formed of 52 bored piles with a diameter of 880 mm. Suspension cables of the pedestrian bridge are formed of 36 mm steel bars. In order to reduce the own weight of the structure, the pavement surface of the overpass was treated with a special antiskid coating, the quality of which in regard of the road adherence and durability is not inferior to traditional bituminous concrete pavement. This type of covering acts as the waterproofing of concrete structures as well. Continuous plate-system reinforced concrete ramps are constructed on both sides of the pedestrian bridge. On the Babite side, its length is 77.61 meters, on the Priezciema side – 90.24 meters. Access ramps were constructed at the ends of the overpass with the length of 22.55 and 22.87 meters. A fence was built on dividing lanes of the motorway – 50 meters in both directions.

Although starting from today the citizens of Pieriga can safely cross this section of the Jurmala motorway, the schedule of the new overpass’ construction works was very tight. The construction, which was launched at the end of the previous year, was carried out daily without holidays. The biggest challenge for the builders was the assembly of the bridge's steel framework span, when everything happened as scheduled and without complications for both the builders and drivers. “Three parts were manufactured. The length of each part was 26 meters. It was possible to transport such a type of large-size cargo only at night. Given that the traffic intensity in this place is particularly high, the main problem was to execute the assembly of the framework's middle part (which is located just above the roadway), hindering the movement of transport as little as possible. To achieve this, we had to plan the works carefully and, above all, to execute all the envisaged works precisely. Due to proper organisation, it was possible to correctly position the structure with a motor crane,” reported the Member of the Board of the LNK Industries JSC Jevgenijs Locovs on the progress of construction.

High quality requirements were put forward in respect of the quality of materials used in the construction of the overpass. For example, in order to ensure the longevity of the bridge, a concrete with very high frost resistance and resistance to environmental aggression was used in the span structure. The surface coating of the bridge's concrete has a respectively high water repellence, mechanical strength and skid resistance. In turn, steel structures have a high corrosion resistance.

The new overpass is a strategically important part of traffic that connects two sides of the road, on the one side of which is the Priezciema village and a bus stop, with the Pinku village in close vicinity, and on the other side is the Babite village with a railway station.
