Construction of the modern laboratory building and reconstruction of the Scientific Library of RTU is in process

Construction of the building of modern scientific laboratory and reconstruction of the Scientific Library of RTU, which will improve the quality of studies in RTU and provide an internationally competitive environment for research and innovation, began in campus of the Riga Technical University (RTU) in Kipsala.

It is planned to establish an interdisciplinary energy research centre of national importance in the new laboratory building of RTU, where scientists of different disciplines will develop innovative solutions to improve energy efficiency and energy self-sufficiency of Latvia. The laboratory complex will be also available to students for development of research projects, as well as to general public and entrepreneurs, who will be able to both learn about individual laboratories and observe researchers in action.

"Performance of high-level research and complex examinations requires modern equipment; therefore construction of the new laboratory building will enhance our scientific competitiveness both locally and internationally. RTU co-operation with the industry will also be strengthened, as the cutting-edge laboratory equipment will allow us to perform a variety of examinations needed by industrial enterprises," as stated by Science Pro-Rector of RTU Professor Talis Juhna.

The Scientific Library of RTU is being reconstructed with the aim of combining the currently scattered departments of the library in one single location, as well as modernisation of the library equipment. “LNK Industries Partnership” is performing construction works of both buildings.

"By creating a modern research centre of national importance as well as forming a progressive learning environment for both students and teaching staff we can contribute to the development of education and science in Latvia. Although we have experience in execution of similar projects, we are going to face a dynamic work process that will require both specific expertise and implementation of various innovative technical solutions," says Member of the Board of AS "LNK Industries" Jevgenijs Locovs.

Construction and renovation works are being performed with support of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) projects "Foundation of a Centre of National Importance for the Research of Acquisition and Sustainable use of Energy and Environmental Resources (Including the Development of the Transport and Mechanical Engineering Centre)" No. 2011/0060/2DP/ and “Foundation of Riga Technical University United Territorial Complex” No. 2010/0066/3DP/ Construction works are planned to be completed by July 2015.
