In the Riga - Skulte railway overpass extensive concreting of the span structures ends
Concreting of 40 sections of span structures has been completed at the ambitious infrastructure project in Sarkandaugava - the Riga-Skulte railway overpass. The construction of the overpass is progressing according to the set deadlines and is scheduled to be completed next summer.
The overpass consists of nine separate structures, with the longest span between the pillars being 32.5 m. Concreting of the span sections started in January this year, using a total of 5860 m3 of concrete. The length of the overpass (without access roads) is 454.4 m and its carriageway area is 7838 m2. In the meantime, the spans were prepared for hydro-proofing, asphalt concrete was laid, and concrete barriers and sound walls were installed on the overpass structures.
"This is not only one of the largest infrastructure projects currently under construction in Riga, but also one of the most challenging. Construction work is being carried out over Viestura prospekts, the Riga-Skulte railway track and tram tracks next to the railway. To provide space for the overpass structures, we rebuilt 110 kV high voltage networks, a medium pressure gas pipeline in Tvaika Street, 10 kV electricity networks, tram and railway overhead lines, as well as rainwater drainage and electronic communications networks. I would like to specially emphasise that the construction of the Skulte overpass is taking place next to a unique crossing of railway and tram tracks, where engineering solutions have been applied to ensure uninterrupted running of trains and trams," Edgars Vaivods, Project Manager of LNK Industries JSC, expresses his satisfaction with the progress of the construction works.
The project will involve the construction and improvement of all Sarkandaugava crossings and access roads adjacent to the new route. Currently, utilities, roads and retaining wall construction works are already underway in Viestura prospekts, Tvaika Street and Sliežu Street. Replacement of windows of adjacent buildings has started, as well as the construction of the Tvaika and Sliežu Street connection and parking lot. Lighting will soon be installed on Tvaika Street and Viestura prospekts, and a combined pedestrian and cycle path will be built on Viestura prospekts up to the Mangaļi railway station. Less than one kilometre long traffic overpass over the railway tracks "Rīga-Skulte" will significantly improve the commuting opportunities for the residents of Sarkandaugava by reducing traffic delays on arterial streets and diverting cargo transit from local streets, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of traffic accident conflict points.
The construction of the Riga - Skulte overpass in Sarkandaugava is being carried out by the Personu apvienība OTC, a joint venture of three construction companies - Binders Ltd, LNK Industries JSC and Latvijas tilti Ltd, commissioned by the Riga City Council Department of Transport. The total construction costs of the Riga - Skulte railway overpass are EUR 45.4 million. Of this, EUR 27.15 million is financed by the Cohesion Fund of the European Union, EUR 1 million by the Latvian state budget grant and the rest by the Riga municipality.
