Commissioning of a Sulphur Handling Terminal at the Port of HaminaKotka, Finland

AS LNK Industries has successfully commissioned a sulphur handling terminal at the Port of HaminaKotka, Finland. The project was implemented under the design and build principle, ensuring a full-service cycle from concept development and design to equipment manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. The client is Rauanheimo, Finland’s leading cargo handling operator, active in several major ports across the country. The project began in early 2024 and was completed in the summer of 2025.

The project has significantly expanded the range of cargo handled at the Port of HaminaKotka, enabling the reception and transshipment of granular sulphur — a cargo type previously not processed at Finnish ports. AS LNK Industries constructed a multifunctional complex covering all stages of the handling process: unloading sulphur from vessels, enclosed and safe transportation to the warehouse without harmful dust emissions, storage, and loading into railcars for onward transport from the port.

Thanks to the flexibility of the technological system, vessel unloading can be carried out at several locations without occupying the quay area with permanent structures or interfering with other port operations. The complex was designed in accordance with the highest fire and explosion safety standards, compliant with ATEX directives (EU directives defining safety requirements for equipment used in explosive atmospheres) and certified according to CE marking requirements (compliance with EU regulations). The facility is equipped with an automated control system that allows all processes to be monitored and managed from a single control point, requiring minimal staff involvement.

“This project is an important achievement both for our company and for Finland’s port infrastructure. The Port of HaminaKotka is a key logistics hub in Europe and the Baltic Sea region, and we are proud to have delivered a technologically advanced solution that combines safety, efficiency, and sustainability. It is another step in strengthening LNK Industries’ presence in the Scandinavian market. I would especially like to highlight the professionalism of our team and the contribution of our international partners — the successful implementation of this project demonstrates our ability to manage complex, cross-border engineering projects at the highest level,” said Genadijs Kamkalovs, Director of AS LNK Industries.

For this project, AS LNK Industries ensured international cooperation by combining the expertise and resources of specialists and companies from five countries across all stages — design, manufacturing, and installation. The technological concept and equipment design were developed by LNK Industries engineers, with the involvement of highly qualified experts from Ukraine and Finland to ensure compliance with local construction standards and the stringent safety requirements applicable to projects in Northern Europe.

For the manufacturing, supply, and installation of structures in Finland, resources from companies in Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia were utilized, while assembly works were performed by specialists from all three Baltic States. AS LNK Industries provided efficient coordination of all project stages, ensuring high-quality implementation within contractual deadlines and budget while optimizing the client’s overall costs.

The Port of HaminaKotka is Finland’s largest universal port, handling container, liquid and dry bulk, gas, Ro-Ro, and project cargoes. It provides high-quality services to Finland’s export industries, transit flows, and major international projects.

The project client, Rauanheimo, is a leader in logistics and cargo handling and the largest dry bulk operator in Finland. The company operates in several major Finnish ports and continuously seeks new opportunities for growth. The aim of the project was to improve efficiency and enhance the sulphur handling process while reducing the environmental impact.
